Microdermabrasion is sought after skin care treatment

Just what is microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion is a procedure that exfoliates and rejuvenates the skin using a machine with a fast moving rotary brush that essentially “sands down” your face. Eh? At present, it is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures. First introduced in Italy in 1985, it is immediately accepted by doctors and beauty professional worldwide. Compared to other skin procedures, it is non-invasive which means no skin penetration or cut is necessary. It is relatively painless therefore does not need anesthesia.

There are many microdermabrasion mediums used by the machine to exfoliate the skin. The mediums used are aluminium oxide crystals, sodium bicarbonate & sodium cloride crystals,  crystals, diamond tips or bristle tips. Among the mediums, only the Aluminum Oxide Crystals garnered controversy of being a health hazard. The newest and probably the most popular ones are the bristle and diamond tips. They are non-toxic and safe even for sensitive skin.

Microdermabrasion procedure is relatively fast, about 30 min to an hour per session. Five to twelve sessions or more are needed depending on the skin quality and condition of each individual. And it will also depend on how the patient’s skin will respond to the procedure. Each session is set two weeks apart and follow-up sessions will depend on the patient’s need. After each session, the skin may redden a bit which will last for only a few hours. Brighter skin will follow after the pinkish effect fades.

Among the benefits of microdermabrasion are the lightening if not diminishing of blemishes, lessening of fine lines and stretch marks and can shallow deep scars. It also eliminates dead skin which ultimately results to faster absorption of other skin care products. It may take continuous treatment for years but the noticeable results are almost instant. Smooth and supple skin though minimal initially can be felt already after the first session. As for microdermabrasion side effects, it has no known serious consequences if done properly, except for that minimal reddening that fades and it is applicable to any type of skin tone. One exception to this is if the procedure is over used then a ‘thinning’ of the skin may occur. Other non-physical benefit is that it is an out-patient procedure that can be done in clinics and even at home. Home microdermabrasion kits are now available. It is fast and can be considered less expensive than other cosmetic treatments that require surgical procedures.

Microdermabrasion may seem too good to be true. But all these claims are proven by both clinical and actual procedures. Many attest to its effectiveness. Like any other beauty product or procedure, best results can only be achieved with religious follow-ups and no miracles should be expected overnight.
